organizzero' il prossimo agosto ad Abbiategrasso (con l'aiuto di Marco
Ferraguti che ha trovato la sede ad Abbiategrasso). A differenza del
workshop 2009 che si era svolto ad Asti questa volta c'e' una quota di
iscrizione, che e' comunque molto bassa se paragonata a quella della
maggior parte di corsi simili. Il workshop 2010 durera' 6 giorni, e
coprira' molti piu' argomenti di quelli discussi l'anno passato.
Anche quest'anno verranno accettate solo un numero limitato di
iscrizioni per permettere ai docenti di seguire meglio gli studenti
durante le dimostrazioni dei programmi. L'iscrizione funziona con il
criterio del first-come, first-served (quando il numero massimo di
iscritti consentito viene raggiunto non saranno piu' accolte domande).

2010 Italian workshop on phylogenetic methods and applications

The workshop will take place from August 27-September 1 in
Abbiategrasso (near Milan, Italy) at the CENTRO CONGRESSI ANNUNCIATA.

The workshop will introduce participants to some of the main methods
of phylogenetic inference (maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and
bayesian methods), the use of phylogenetic trees in comparative
studies (timetrees, historical biogeography, analyses of
diversification rates, character evolution), and the most commonly
used computer programs currently available.

The workshop will see lectures and software demonstrations by several
leading phylogeneticists, and is open to everybody with an interest in
phylogenetics and comparative biology. Some previous experience with
phylogenetic methods is helpful, but not necessary.

Only 20 spots are available for the 2010 workshop, and will be filled
on a first-come, first served basis. As the 2009 workshop was fully
booked within 2 weeks from the original announcement, early
registration is highly recommended.

Theme: Evolutionary impact of hybridization in freshwater fishes: a cytogenomic approach

Evolutionary biology is facing important challenges which include the demonstration of the actual role and extension of hybridization and polyploidy in past and present animal diversification. Comparative genome analysis has opened new insights into these old paradigms, still almost only recognized with a primary role in plants evolution. Unlike previous karyotyping even by chromosome banding, which did not allow the detection of intergenomic differentiation, comparative genome analysis by GISH (Genomic In Situ Hybridization) has opened remarkable perspectives to disclosure genome restructuring in allopolyploids. By applying this technique to the hybridogenetic S. alburnoides fish complex, our main goal is to investigate genome interactions and contribute to clear up the dynamics of non-sexual genomes. We are currently looking for a motivated student, who would like to integrate such ongoing research project in molecular cytogenetics.

A grant for a Ph.D. thesis, followed by a two-years post-doc, is available at INRA at Kourou, French Guiana, and Nancy, France. The topic combines ecology, quantitative genetics, genomics and ecophysiology to study the evolutionary bases of adaptation of Neotropical rainforest trees to their environment. Forest tree species are dominant components (in terms of biomass and as ecological drivers) of one of the most diverse ecosystems, the tropical rainforest. Their environmental adaptations, and their potential to face climatic changes, determine both the structure of these ecological communities and their fate under global change.

The diversity of the response of tropical trees to their environment is being elucidated, and in particular, it has been found that several genera harbor species that differentiate along the water availability axis (drought/flooding) (Baraloto et al., 2007). It has also been shown that closely related species, with slightly different ecological properties, can be differentiated by genetic markers (Duminil et al., 2006). Recently, sequences of genes involved in plant water balance (aquaporins) have been isolated in a set of tropical tree genera (Audigeos et al., submitted; Brousseau 2009; Scotti 2009a) at UMR EcoFoG and a large-scale greenhouse experiment, with 2000 seedlings from eighteen half-sib families of Eperua falcata, is under way in the same research centre, with the goal of evaluating genetic and environmental components of responses to water stresses (Scotti 2009b). The existence of a relevant genetic component of quantitative trait diversity in rainforest tree populations has been recently proven (Scotti et al. 2010). These preliminary data set the conditions for addressing the question of the understanding of ecophysiological and genetic mechanisms of the adaptation of trees to their environment in natural conditions. The hypothesis to test is that trees growing in different conditions show differential adaptation to their respective environments, and that both physiological adjustments and genetic adaptation contribute to this behaviour.

In particular, the Ph.D. student will be proposed to:

-          build a genetic linkage map and identify the genetic basis of quantitative traits based on the greenhouse experiment and data by using AFLP and gene-based (Audigeos et al. submitted; Brousseau 2009) markers

-          setup a reciprocal transplant experiment in natural conditions, with half-sib families of species of the genus Eperua, with the aim of evaluating genetic and environmental components of environmental adaptations, as well as phenotypic plasticity and genotype × environment interactions; analyse the ecophysiological and growth traits of the transplanted seedlings and identify the genetic components of differences among sites and among environments, and compare the results obtained across genera.

-          validate the genetic bases, identified in (a), based on quantitative data obtained in (b), by genotyping seedlings grown in reciprocal transplants with markers that have shown correlation with the traits, and by validating the correlation in the natural setting of reciprocal transplants.

Life in French Guiana

Scientific life is very active at the EcoFoG research centre in Kourou, French Guiana, with weekly seminars, journal clubs and training courses. Lab equipments are standard international level in genetics and plant physiology.

The climate is hot and humid, but largely mitigated by trade winds on the coast (where Kourou is located), with alternating rainy and dry seasons. The main asset for leisure time in French Guiana is its outstanding natural setting (the tropical rainforest); the Carnival in French Guiana is also unique. Everyday life can be expensive, in particular for housing and import goods. A vehicle is generally necessary for travel between towns. Life is generally laid back, although with occasional insecurity problems.

Lo scorso settembre si e' svolto il primo workshop italiano di metodi

workshop, co-sponsorizzato e cofinanziato dalla SIBE ed ospitato da
Francesco Scalfari e Fabrizio Manca presso il polo universitario di Asti,
hanno partecipato 20 studenti, prevalentemente dottorandi e postdoc,
provenienti da università sia italiane che straniere (New York University
e Imperial College).  Durante i 4 giorni di lezioni gli speakers invitati

Il numero di iscritti e' stato limitato a 20 in maniera da permettere agli
studenti di avere numerose possibilita' di interagire con i docenti, ad
esempio durante i pranzi e le cene. Questo fatto ha permesso una
esperienza di full-immersion nel campo della filogenesi tipica di corsi
come quelli di Woods Hole o Bodega bay. Al termine del corso sia gli
studenti che tutti i docenti hanno espresso una notevole soddisfazione per
questa esperienza, insieme alla speranza di poter ripetere il workshop nel
prossimo futuro.

PhD Studentship in Molecular Biology and Aquaculture

A PhD studentship is available within the Martin Ryan Institute (MRI), National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland (http://mri.nuigalway.ie/); as part of the Sea Change Initiative-funded EIRCOD project, with the support of the Marine Institute and the Marine Research Sub-programme of the National Development Plan 2007-2013.

This position will focus on the application of genetic markers, such as microsatellites and SNPs, to the study of both wild populations and farmed (captive) stocks of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua).  The main aims will be to investigate population structure of cod in waters around Ireland and to support the ongoing EIRCOD broodstock and breeding programme. 
Skills required:
This position is suitable to graduate students holding at least a BSc (Hons) or equivalent in biological sciences or related fields.  Familiarity in molecular research and population genetics are an asset, but preference will be given to applications with previous experience in molecular techniques, including microsatellite genotyping, DNA sequencing and relevant data analyses.  The successful candidate should be able to undertake research independently as well as part of a team, showing good organizational skills, creativity, initiative and ability to cooperate.  Some field sampling is expected (e.g. sampling fish in cages at sea and commercial landings at ports), although most of the lab work will be based at MRI Carna laboratories.
The PhD studentship is available immediately and it will be funded for 4 years with a student fellowship of 25,000 euro p.a., which is tax-free and includes College fees (currently c.5,400 euro p.a.).

SPANISH RESEARCH TRAINING FELLOWSHIP FOR POPULATION BIOLOGY STUDIES

The Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MCI) will open a call
for the so-
called FPI (Formación de Personal Investigador) Fellowship Program in January
2010. One of these fellowships is associated to the research project
‘Implications of
the environmental and demographic fluctuations on the coexistence of
cryptic rotifer
species’, leaded by Manuel Serra (http://www.uv.es/~serram/) at the Evolutionary
Ecology Laboratory - ICBiBE (http://www.uv.es/~biodiver/v/index.htm).

The project focuses on the hypothesis that salinity fluctuations, besides
demographic fluctuations caused by the life cycle, allow stable coexistence of
zooplankters with high similarity in their resource exploitation and predation
vulnerability. Methods and techniques involved in this project are
pond sampling,
taxonomic identification using molecular markers, laboratory experiments using
chemostats, modelling of ecological and evolutionary processes, and advanced
statistical analysis. Therefore, a strong background in population ecology and
evolution is required to be awarded with the above mentioned
fellowship. Skills in
statistics, population genetics, molecular biology and computer programming are
welcome.

Details will be given in the official call made by MCI. However, based
in previous
calls, the fellowship is expected to have the following features:
(1) The fellowship will provide support for four years.
(2) The fellow will follow post-graduate studies (master and doctorate
for fellows with
a BS, or doctorate for fellows with a MSc;

(3) Eligible students must have a degree, obtained after January 1, 2006, which

Per chi si fosse perso le ultime novità sul neocreazionismo italiano: qualche tempo fa è stato organizzato un congresso di stampo anti-evoluzionista al CNR (sì, il Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche). Il tutto organizzato da Roberto De Mattei, vicepresidente dello stesso CNR, che ha poi propostogli atti del congresso su un libro di recente pubblicazione cofinanziato dal CNR stesso. Tutto questo ha ovviamente scandalizzato il mondo scientifico italiano, non solo quello evoluzionistico. Perché al di là dell'evoluzione, è la nozione stessa di scienza che viene attaccata e ridicolizzata da chi dovrebbe invece rappresentarla. Marco Ferraguti (presidente SIBE) è intervenuto in più riprese a chiedere come possano accadere fatti del genere (per esempio su Pikaia, Micromega, il Corriere della Sera). L'Università degli Studi di Roma "Tor Vergata", in occasione dei 150 anni dalla pubblicazione dell'Origine della specie di Charles Darwin, è lieta di informare che il 24 novembre 2009 dalle ore 9.30 presso il Centro Congressi Villa Mondragone si terrà il convegno "L'evoluzione in mostra", promosso dalla Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia, dalla Facoltà di Medicina e Chirurgia e dalla Facoltà di Scienze MM. FF. NN.. Nell'ambito del convegno è stato bandito un concorso sul tema dell'Evoluzione rivolto alle classi o a gruppi di studenti degli ultimi tre anni delle Scuole secondarie di secondo grado di Roma e Provincia.
Il concorso consiste nella presentazione di un elaborato di carattere grafico e multimediale sul tema dell'evoluzione biologica ed, in particolare, dell'evoluzione della specie umana, da inviarsi in formato elettronico secondo le modalità e i termini dettagliatamente indicati nel bando che si trova in allegato.
Inoltre, nell'ambito dell'iniziativa è stata realizzata la mostra "La Biodiversità e l'albero della vita", ove saranno esposti esemplari e collezioni esistenti presso l'Università "Tor Vergata".
